Violation of freedom of speech in Russia

(The following post was originally posted on October 07 2006)

Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent Russian journalist and critic of the war in Chechnya, has been found shot dead at her apartment block in central Moscow. It is a disgrace for Russia and a loss for the struggle for freedom of speech around the world. It is now up to the Ministeries of EU to stand up for democracy and freedom and show a harsh stand towards the political oppression that is going on in our contemporary Russia. Step by step, Russia is heading towards a more authoritarian state each day. Ongoing fussing with Georgia and openly support for dictatorships like Iran and Belarus, are things that can only increase my skepticism towards this nation.
The worst thing is that we do not know which political agenda Putin belongs to. Right now it seems to be the agenda of “all power to Putin”.
