First Muslim Elected To Congress

(The following post was originally posted on http://www.carlteglund.blogspot.com November 09 2006)

The United States got its first muslim congressman yesterday. It is Keith Ellison, 43, a state lawmaker and lawyer who has been running his campaign from Minnesota. For me it is even more interesting due to Minnesota has so many descendants from Sweden living there. On the campaign trail, Ellison talked little about his religious background, focusing instead on his call for other important political agendas. It is notably to point out (eventhough one can celebrate that the Black Muslim Movement in USA has finally got their breakthrough) that this man is a very BAD candidate to represent the Muslim community. He’s an advocator for the immidiate retreat from Iraq and therefore, indirectly, leaving his muslim brothers and sisters alone for an endless suffercation in a country torn apart by chaos. It would be VERY unwise leaving Iraq at this particular moment, because if we do, Iraq would fall even deeper down in insurgency and the anarchy ruling Iraq right now. It is negligent argueing that the US should leave the country, and have no other opinion what to do after that. Shall we just leave them alone minding their own business? Well, then there will be a very irresponsible world that we live in that cannot stand up for democratic and liberal values wherever they are being questioned.
