Today the Swedish Prime Minister was performing an official speech in China during his stay in the country. His visit has been criticized by many, especially from people on the far-left political scale. However, I support him traveling to unfree countries because I believe in a dialog – especially with those who are willing to talk instead of using violence. And even though China is far from humane towards its critics about the lack of human rights, the country has showed a willingness to open up a little and co-operate with the surrounding world. Among other news, Sweden has promised to pay for a professorship in human rights in China at the University of Peking. I hope it pays of. 2 weeks ago a professor was charged for crimes of criticizing the Chinese Government.
He received many interesting questions from the students. One of my favorites is about the Swedish welfare system;
“What is your opinion about the Swedish welfare system? I heard it is so well-functional that people don’t even want to or need to work.”
Hear hear. Couldn’t say it better myself!
